Well I am having a month of rejections!! I applied for an article in Quilting Arts Magazine and was rejected earlier in June. My piece for the "I'm Not Crazy" for SAQA was not selected. They had 128 entries and only chose 20. I'm very bummed about this one because this subject is very personal to me and I put alot of emotion into that piece. Then I entered the Quilting Arts Magazine's Reader Challenge on Signature Color and there were over 150 entries and only 15 were chosen. I had a blast on this little 8" x 8" project including the beading around the binding. This will be a cute addition to my studio and it makes me smile. I'm just a bit unsure if I want to participate in these things for a while. It seems abstract art is trendy at the moment and representational art is on the back burner. I still love to made art and will continue.
Your work is FANTASTIC! Wrap your heart in some batting and keep on submitting ... your work will be chosen!

Art goes through phases and you still have to be who you are. Don't let this get you down. There is still a place for representational art. With the number of entries in each of these contests, there are a lot of other disappointed people too. Also judges are looking for a cohesive "look" and so choose pieces based on their narrow criteria. Love the piece by the way - very nice.
ReplyDeleteI do what I do because I enjoy what I do! Art work is subjective so.....just keep doing your art! We love what you do and that counts!!
ReplyDeleteHi Laurie,
ReplyDeleteKeep going with your work, I entered Quilting Arts four times and I did not get in. You sound like me and I keep the rejection letters on my wall for INSPIRATION. I have the letters from Pokey on my wall right now as I am preparing for an exhibition. Laurie, keep going girl! Keep going! I stopped entering their challenges because I felt that I needed to take a different route. I tried so many times and I was discouraged and stressed but eventually it happened and my work was published, and I thought that I needed to take another route. I love your piece and I believe 100% you are going to have a breakthrough in quilting but it is going to come in a different direction. Your work is going to be published trust me on that one. I know how you feel because I was there four times and I just had to stop entering Quilting Arts challenges for good. There is something else greater for you to do. OMG! you sounded like me back in 2006-10. Girl, the rejection hurt like hell...I cried four times because I thought that I was not good enough. I dyed fabric, painted on fabric...darn it I did everything LOL! just to get my work accepted and nothing happened. Keep those rejection letters because your time is coming. You are going to look back on Quilting Arts and understand that it prepared you for a greater publication and journey ahead. I am going to look in someone's magazine and see your name and face. I will gently say, "Look at Laurie...everything happened at the right time!" You'll see. Also, there is a quote that my mother stated to me, "Rejection is God's protection because there is something greater for us all". Something great is going to happene to you and darn I will follow your blog because your going to have alot to publish. Also, one last thing...when rejection comes again and sometime it does...you will be ready because it is only the universe telling you that there is something greater and you need not worry. Keep Going!
Sincerely,
Quilting Bee 1

Hi Laurie,
ReplyDeleteI think it must be Karma that I stumbled onto your blog. I like you, have left the world of cookie cutter quilting into the limitless world of designing art quilts. It has been along time since I made a "blanket". Your work is wonderful and has inspired me. It is Quilting Art's loss that they did not have the insight to pick your work for their contest. But as an Artist, I understand the need or desire to be recognized as an Artist, and that is the loss for you. But as I read your older postings, you have received ribbons for other works at shows etc, so feel good for that. Sometimes with certain pieces, the viewer does not hear/see what we are trying to say. Sad for them I say. As a contestant myself, currently for a McCall's quilting magazine design contest, do I create something "they" would choose or stay true to myself, to my art. Hmmmm??? I will go to where my art leads me. As you do.
Best wishes,
Joy Tallman
Entering your work in challenges and juried events is like buying fruit.....it's a gamble.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it's sweet......and sometimes its bitter.
I find that it makes me feel better to take the rejection letters outside to the burn barrel and light them up!
Your work inspires me. I am happy to find your blog.......I will keep an eye on you.
